Lagoa de Obidos Beach
Obidos lagoon (Lagoa de Obidos) is a beatify beach and saltwater bay close to the pretty walled city of Obidos. The beach is a popular tourist destination as it offers both calm bathing waters and more exciting surfing swell. Lagoa de Obidos is the largest saltwater lagoon in Portugal with the lakes and waterways extending inland for 6 kilometers.
Lagoa de Obidos Overview
The calm inland waters provide a sheltered environment for a variety of wildlife which can be viewed from one of the scenic walks. The best beaches of the region are at the mouth of the Lagoa de Obidos near the pretty town of Foz do Arelho.
Obidos Lagoon offers a safe location for beginner wind and kite surfers while the ocean facing side provides powerful swell for surfing and body boarding. Lagoa de Obidos is a beautiful area that is slightly off the common tourist trail. The area offers stunning scenery combined with a very traditional and hospitable Portuguese atmosphere.
Lagoa de Obidos Beach Tourist Information
The main beach of Praia do Foz de Arelho is on the northern bank of Obidos Lagoon. It is close to the mouth of the estuary and the town of Foz de Arelho. The beach on the southern bank is called the Praia do Bom Sucesso and is much quieter. The south beach is slightly smaller but offers better hikes and views. Around the interior of Obidos Lagoon are other small beaches and these beaches are much quieter. There is a good cycle path that pass through the surrounding pine forests.
Praia do Foz de Arelho beach is the best beach of Obidos Lagoon which faces both the might of the Atlantic and the calm waters of the lagoon. The beach has golden sands, good amenities and is a great place for a day on the beach. Praia do Foz de Arelho lies 9km to the west of Caldas da Rainha and 15km from Obidos. Praia do Bom Sucesso on the southern side of the Lagoa de Obidos estuary has a more remote and wild atmosphere that offers great walks around the cliff headland and provides great panoramic views from the top of the cliffs.
